Tag: [2-KF]
Campaign: ViE#2
Affiliation: Axis
Country: Germany
Type: Kriegsmarine
Allies: None
Opponent(s): US2AD
Rank System used: Kriegsmarine ranks
Squads: 4 (Stealth, Offense, Defense, Command)
Commander: Admiral Ewok
Record: 12-10

The 2. Kreuzer-Flottille "Niedersachsen" was the sole Axis Division in ViE#2. The Division was commanded by Admiral Ewok who had been selected by the Axis CinC Lonewolf. The division is a fictional Kriegsmarine (German War Navy) unit, though its squads are named after ships that really existed during World War II.

The divisional tag was [2-KF]. Its main adversary was the US2AD (US 2nd Armored Division), which was beaten by the [2-KF] by only two more victories, with 12-10. Though its players were equally skilled and motivated as those of the 1-GJ had been in the previous campaign, the US2AD proved to be a more competent opponent than its precedessor, making ViE#2 exciting until its end.

The [2-KF] used Kriegsmarine ranks and was the first division to introduce CO Cadets. Its squad structure was still based on the traditional Axis structure with three squads, a defense squad, an offense squad an an elite/infiltration squad.

Commanding Officers

These were the Axis COs at the beginning of the campaign.

As the campaign progressed, some COs were promoted by Ewok due to good work, while Bad Haggis was made a new CO to replace the inactive Yellowledbetter as Commander of the GN squad. Moondogg and Diver were both moved up by one rank on August 25, 2006. Bad Haggis was apointed as new CO on September 9, 2006. Finally, Kamikaze and Diver were both promoted by one rank each on September 10, 2006.

The final CO lineup was as following:

Notably this means that except for the CinC (Lonewolf) and the commander of the division (Ewok), none of the COs of the 2-KF remained in the same rank during the campaign. Diver even moved up by two ranks although being arguably not the most impressive CO in the campaign, but he had the most "open" ranks above him.

Avatar

Admiral Ewok decided early not to select the divisional avatar himself but instead give his soldiers a chance to vote for it and submit their own avatars for a poll. Because of this, the 2-KF had to wait much longer for an avatar than the US2AD, but got it still in time before the first battle started. Three members submitted a total of five avatars, with the final one being selected in a 48-hour lasting poll on August 7 and 8, 2006.

Actual Avatar

The following avatar was selected to be used by the members of the division:

It was later modified by DeadlyFreud, and the modified version was then used:

Structure

The Flottille itself was further divided into 3 main squads which are represented by the ships they serve on, the U-47, the Schlachtschiff Gneisenau and the Schwerer Kreuzer Admiral Scheer. The U-47 is an U-Boat which carries the unit's elite soldiers, the Schlachtschiff Gneisenau is a battleship with enormous firepower which carries the main offensive troops and the Admiral Scheer is a bold Heavy Cruiser which carries the seamen trained to defend their ship and any base they are stationed on.

U-Boot U-47

Hidden in the dark waters of the North Sea and Mediterranean, this U-Boot fulfilled its mission undetected but with great efficiency. That is exactly what its captain, Fregattenkapitän (later Kapitän zur See) Moondogg, trained his soldiers to do. Only the best soldiers found a place in this crew.

Schlachtschiff Gneisenau

With its enormous firepower, the Gneisenau could quickly dispatch of most foes it encounters on the Seven Seas. However, its crew, captained by Korvettenkapitän Yellowledbetter, was equally dangerous when setting foot on land. Yellowledbetter was later replaced due to inactivity by Oberfähnrich zur See Bad Haggis, who was promoted to Leutnant zur See for that reason.

Schwerer Kreuzer Admiral Scheer

The always reliable Heavy Cruiser Admiral Scheer packed quite a punch, regardless wheter it was attacking or defending. The same applies to the seamen onboard, who, led by Leutnant zur See (later Oberleutnant zur See and finally Kapitänleutnant) Diver could fiercly defend any object or location they are assigned to, and their offensive capabilities should not be underestimated.

The Admirality

The Admiral and his flag officer staff, most notably Korvettenkapitän (later Fregattenkapitän) Kamikaze, were usually on deck of the flotilla's most powerful warship, the Gneisenau. The flag officers were skilled fighters themselves and did not hesitate to aid their subordinates in combat. But normally they used most of the time to plan their battles and issue commands to the other ships. The Admiral and his adjutant could regularly be found inspecting their fleet by using the Admiral's personal vessel, the Schnellboot Weyhe, a Fast Attack Craft.

History

Though the unit is fictional, the ships it is composed of are not. Here is some basic information about them:

The Gneisenau was the lead ship of the same class of enlarged German "pocket battleships" (also classified as battlecruisers). Her sister ship was the famous Scharnhorst. She was comissioned on May 21, 1938 and sunk on March 23, 1945 as a blockship in Gotenhafen.[1]

The Admiral Scheer was a Deutschland class heavy cruiser, comissioned on November 12, 1934. It was sunk by bombs in the last weeks of the war, on April, 9 1945 [2]

The U-47 was a type VII B German submarine (U-Boot), comissioned on December 17, 1938. She is famous for sinking the HMS Royal Oak in the heavily guarded Scapa Flow bay. She sunk 30 merchant ships before going missing on March 7, 1941. Up to this day, it is not known what exactly happened to the ship and its crew of 45. [3]

Note that the flottila's name is based on the German Bundesland Niedersachsen, (Lower Saxony in English), which is Ewok's home state. The state was founded on November 1, 1946, thus over one year after the end of WWII. The name had been used before to describe the area, however, and it even had an anthem, the Niedersachsenlied, as early as the 1930s.

Trivia

  • The [2-KF] was the first naval division in ViE and one of the very few naval divisions that ever existed in BFE/ViE. It wasn't until ViE#7 when the KK-N appeared that another naval division was formed in ViE.
