The Commander in Chief is the highest held officer position in ViE. CinCs are generally responsible for a variety of tasks including map selection (together with the management), territory point allocation, choosing a General for each division, bidding, and overall managment of their Army. The Axis CinC is often called Generalfeldmarschall, which was the highest German rank in the Axis Army during World War II.
CinC is often used as a generic term to describe any rank with the same duties and responsibilities, similar to the way in which General is used to describe any divisional commander in ViE. Names and insignia for CinC ranks vary widely from campaign to campaign, depending on the chosen divisions as well as the CinC's own preferences.

Any ViE player can be appointed to CinC by the previous CinC, although the normal way to reach this rank is to work your way up through the CO Career Path. It may take very long to reach this rank. By tradition, the previous campaign's General becomes CinC, but this has by no means always been the case in ViE history.

Management has established certain rules regarding CinCs, for example they must go back to ordinary soldier in the campaign after their CinC campaign, but they are granted extemption from randomization. Inofficially, a player cannot become CinC twice in ViE.
Allied CinCs
The rank is used in many variations but usually just called CinC. In ViE#4, the rank was that of a British Field Marshal. In ViE#5, the rank was called General of the Army, in ViE#6, Supreme Allied Commander. ViE#7 saw the first greatly different Allied CinC rank: Marshal of the Soviet Union. ViE#8 went back to the generic "CinC". The Allied tag for CinC has almost always been CinC., that can be traced back to the early campaigns of BFE. Variations include SAC. for Supreme Allied Commander and even ****, the traditional Axis CinC tag.

Axis CinCs
The generic name for Axis CinCs is Generalfeldmarschall, even though that rank is only correct for commanders of Heer units. The Axis featured a wide range of variations throughout ViE: ViE#2 had a Großadmiral, ViE#3 a Primo Maresciallo dell´Impero, ViE#4 the Oberbefehlshaber der Luftwaffe. ViE#5 was the first campaign since ViE#1 with an ordinary Generalfeldmarschall. ViE#7 then featured the Japanese Emperor. ViE#8 went back to ViE#6 ranks and featured Generalfeldmarschall again.
