Ewok is was an Allied CO, former Axis Commander-in-Chief and Axis General and veteran of all ViE campaigns up to ViE#11. He was last serving as a Squad Leader of the "Thunderbird" Elite Squadron in the Allied U.S. 8th Army Air Force division in ViE#11. Ewok was one of the five main Tournament Administrators in ViE#1 and one of the founders of Victory in Europe. He was well known among the community and considered one of the most famous veterans of the tournament and its precedessor, having served since the first campaign of Battle For Europe with some interruptions. Ewok was once a known "Axis for Life" player, but this attitude has changed drastically due to Ewok's various appearances on the Allied side in ViE, e.g. as TA in ViE#1, and as player in the A10MD, US6AD, 3.SA, A28, PPCLI and 8AAF. Ewok's signature attack was a frontal knife or spade assault.

Ewok was one of the most notorious contributors to the ViE Wiki.

Following racist and other offensive comments, Ewok was banned for a year from Victory in Europe in April 2008.

ViE Career

Ewok founded ViE along with BigRich, Moose, ScubaShark and Wolf_Eel after being banned from the Battle For Europe forums on April 11, 2006. He was one of the TAs from the beginnings of ViE until after its first campaign and was, as such, mainly responsible for the moderation of the forums and their usergroups. Ewok was randomly playing on Axis or Allies as a TA, depending on what weapons he currently favored. He was thus both loved and hated among the players from both sides. During the first campaign, Ewok was sometimes forced to play on Allies because they were outnumbered, while he originally planned to switch between the sides back and forth for each battle.

On Thursday, July 13, 2006, Ewok was offered a position as Axis General by Axis CinC Lonewolf, which he accepted after some discussion with his fellow admins. On Monday, July 17, 2006, Moose finally announced Ewoks retirement from a TA position, as a TA has to be neutral, something that is obviously not possible as high-ranking CO for one side.

Ewoks time as Admiral ended after September 16, 2006, with the end of ViE#2. Since then, Ewok was officially added as a member of the League of Nations, representing Germany, though he already helped the LoN inofficially before.

On September 20, 2006, it was announced by Lonewolf that Ewok would become the new Axis CinC for ViE#3. In that campaign, he led the Axis to one of their greatest victories so far, along with Moondogg. (see Division#Stats for the 3-RB), but he also had conflicts with the management:

On October 23, 2006, Ewok was removed from the League of Nations for "conduct unsupportive of the tournament". He was admitted back to the LoN two days later, after a lengthy discussion with TA Moose.

On October 29, 2006, Ewok was temporarily banned from the ViE forums, again without any proper reason given. The ban was lifted shortly thereafter after Ewok protested.

In November 2006, Ewok was the driving power behind the Career System, along with Catachan. As Ex-CinC he was extempt from random in ViE#4 and permitted to stay on Axis to advise the Axis COs, especially with regard to the Career System.

In February 2007, Ewok released the new edition of the Career System after discussing it publicly. In keeping with a "tradition", he also created the ranks for the Axis for the fifth consecutive time, but also the last time (as of ViE#10).

On February 11, 2007, Ewok was randomed to the Allies for the first time in his ViE career. He was soon asked to assist Crisp in commanding the A10MD's elite squad, the Spartans. Due to real-life issues, Ewok was not very active in ViE#5, however, only to return on April 9, 2007, after over a month of inactivity. The registration process for ViE#6 assigned him to Allies once more, where he ended up under the command of Lonewolf once again, this time in the division's stealth and infiltration squad. He worked his way up through the rank and finished the campaign as NCO, having attracted attention from the upper ranks.

On June 11, 2007, Ewok was randomed to Allies for the third time in a row. He had been offered a CO position for the division he was assigned to before, but the management forbade him to take it, accusing him of having been a bad example to other players, among other things. He nevertheless made it to the highest non-CO rank right at the start of the campaign. After a two-week long vacation in July 2007, Ewok did not return to active duty in ViE, having lost all motivation. He did not return until September 9, when he signed up for ViE Campaign 8 and ended up on Allies for the fourth consecutive time. He soon ascended to NCO in the 110th Rifles squad and then second-in-command.

Near the end of a formidable campaign, Ewok had to quit because he had to move to another city. In his new flat he did not have internet access until November 22, 2007, by when ViE#9 had already kicked off. Ewok registered late and was randomed to the Axis 132ª Divisione Corazzata Ariete. He correctly expected not to get to play much due to his time-consuming studies in medicine.

On January 4, 2008, Ewok signed up with new motivation for ViE#10, ending up in the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. He was admitted to the division's elite battalion, under his old friend Captain Moondogg. He then applied for the job as XO of the squad and got it. After a formidable campaign, in which he was the most active Allied player by Total Time Online, Ewok was offered a CO position in the 8AAF by General Netzsicherheit on February 20, 2008. He accepted immediately and took over command of the division's Elite squad, the "Thunderbird".

On April 22, 2008. Ewok was banned for a year from all ViE property after comments regarding the Polish division of ViE #12. Ewok appealed to the Security Council's decision, which was consequently changed from a permanent ban to a one year timespan, ending on April 21, 2009. Ewok admitted that his posts were stupid, but also found the community and the SC overreacted ("as usual"). He also complained about not being able to apologize, with nobody telling him for three days what was even going on at all. He also criticized the decision as inadequate, given that he made comparable comments earlier without recieving any negative feedback or even punishment.

Career Overview

Ewok begann his career as TA in the beginning of ViE. He left the position when he became Admiral in ViE#2. After that, he was made Axis CinC in ViE#3. From ViE#4 onwards he served as soldier or NCO with little special functions, apart from his League of Nations membership (ended in ViE#6) and jobs as NCO or in the strat teams. He was assistant squad leader in ViE#5, ViE#6, ViE#7 (nominally), ViE#8 and ViE#10. In ViE#10 he reached a CO-type rank for the first time since his CinC position in ViE#3, and finally reached a "true" CO position in ViE#11.

Medals

As an admin and later as Admiral/CinC, Ewok was not elegible for recommendation based awards. However, he has been eagerly gathering stat-based medals just as every other player.

Individual stat awards for single battles are not listed unless they are out of the ordinary (e.g. Polish DeadlyFreud in ViE#4), only whole-campaign stat medals are listed. Recommendation-based medals are also mostly omitted, because of a lack of pictures and background information on these medals.

It may be noted that Ewok got a golden stat based medal in every campaign he played in, except ViE#7 (where he was registered but didn't play).

Gaming Biography

Ewok started playing multiplayer shooters in 1997, when Jedi Knight (Dark Forces II) was released. He became a decent Counter-Strike player about a year after its release, but switched to Day of Defeat immediately in early 2001 when its first BETA version was available. Up until then, Ewok rather avoided the Internet and preferred to play LAN games, but with the growing popularity of internet play among his RL friends, he also started playing on Public Servers. Ewok officially was the leader of the DoD section of his clan, the Brothers of Blood, but they never had a clanfight and soon dissolved. Ewok did not play competitevly until he became aware of the Battle For Europe Day of Defeat tournament:

Battle For Europe (BFE)

The BFE tournament was a milestone in Ewoks career as a Day of Defeat player and he stayed with it for four and a half years, with some breaks inbetween.

Main Article: Ewoks BFE History

Other PC-Games

Apart from DoD, Ewok plays a broad variety of games, mostly single-player, including RTS such as the Age of Empires series, WarCraft 3 or turn-based strategy such as the Civilization series. As a StarWars fan, Ewok also owns and played all games of the X-Wing series as well as the Jedi Knight series. His interest in space games is not limited to the StarWars universe though, but includes Starlancer, Freelancer, Freespace 2 and DarkStar One. One of Ewoks favorite games of all time is the German RTS game Settlers II, an oldie but goldie from 1996. Ewok's most recent non-DoD favorites include LEGO StarWars 2 or Supreme Commander.

Real-Life Background

I am the one known as Ewok in ViE, but my real name is Leonard, being nicknamed Leo by many. In real-life I am a male German student of Medicine at the Medical University of Hannover (MHH). I was born in 1985 (thus being 22 at the moment), in the German university-city of Göttingen. My parents are both ethnic Germans but I have (at least distant) family ties to Hungary and England, to name a few examples.

With the exception of a few months I've lived in a small town close to Bremen for my whole life. After 3 years of Kindergarten and 13 years of school my primary and secondary education finally came to an end in 2005, when I graduated with a good Abitur. I originally wanted to become a real-life CO, an officer in the German Armed Forces, but was deemed unfit for military service. I still managed to get into a rifle club for German Army Reserve members, where I have the great and rare opportunity to shoot with a real K98, among other rifles and pistols. I am also member of another, more typical German rifle club.

Apart from shooting sports my favorite hobbies include reading books, where I have no narrow preference but will read anything from Harry Potter to popular science books dealing with quantum mechanics. Other interests are pen&paper roleplaying (yeah I was quite a geek for a while but am stranded without a group to play with atm) and football (soccer for you stupid Americans), although the latter rather as a spectator than player.

Playing Style

Ewok is a reckless player who will usually ignore his own virtual life and sacrifice it for the team or sometimes for suicidal one-man actions such as attacking the enemy first flag single-handidly. Ewok values teamplay higher than individual success and is often one of the most talkactive players in the stats (due to his TS bind).

Melee addiction

Image:Jaws_Ewok.gif
A humorous self-portrait of Ewok after the fourth battleday of ViE#6, in which he knifed 85 Axis players in the battle on dod_nuernberg24_b1, distantly resembling the shark from Jaws.

Sometimes known as "Spade Master", Ewok is probably the player most commonly associated with excessive use of the Spade or Knife. He will sometimes approach opponents directly with nothing but a Spade or Knife, resulting in a high number of kills with those weapons but also in many deaths. Ewok was often criticized for this playing style, as it could hurt the team, but Ewok proved the critics wrong repeatedly when making it apparent that there is no difference in kis K:D Rate with or without melee weapons. This was highly disputed after the battle on swamp (5th battleday of ViE#2), where Ewok made 72,5% of all kills with his spade and his excessive use of this weapon resulted in many TKs from his teammates.

In recent times Ewok has reacted to the criticism by using his spade or knife less in head-to-head confrontations, unless he is out of ammo.

However, Ewok has much more to offer than just backstabbing opponents. He is very flexible in his choice of weapons, capable to use almost every weapon from rifle to bazooka and utilizing them in very different ways.

Rifle Class

His standard approach is to pick up a rifle class and move forward aggressively with it. Ewok does rarely camp with the rifle in his hand, rather he will strafe diagonally towards the enemy territory. Upon approaching the enemy, he will switch to the spade or knife after missing with his first few rifle shots, given he is close enough (roughly <10 m). On long range, he prefers to use the ironsights to take out enemies. If he does choose to camp, he will usually stand right around a corner or crouch behind a sandbag or similar barrier, then pop out suddenly and try to hit the enemy with directed fire. He mentioned on several occasions that his aim gets worse as the enemy comes closer. On the other hand, he will sometimes kill with rifle shots at ranges more suitable for a sniper.

Rocket and Riflegrenades

Along with the rifle class, the rocket class is the one Ewok picks most often. Because of his intuitive understanding of ballistics he is very skilled in the precise long range use of riflegrenades or rockets. Ewok sees the M1 Carbine of the Allies as their best weapon next to the Garand and holds the Axis' C96 in high regards for its unmatched close range firepower and -rate. His devestating use of the C96 in ViE#9 earned him much respect. When Moondogg doesn't happen to be in the team, Ewok will usually pick the Rocket class when on Allies. Along with the rifleman class, the rocket class is definately Ewok's favorite class.

Assault Class

It should be noted that Ewok was once feared for his extreme accuracy with the MP40 in the Klein BFE mod of DoD:Source, but has mostly refrained from using the MP40 or Thompson MP in the standard DoD:Source so far. It is just hard to say how good he is with this weapons, especially given that he is quite good with the C96 and bad with the StG/BAR, and the MP40/Thompson are somewhere inbetween these.

Support Class

This is the one class that Ewok almost never uses. He has refrained from using the StG44 or BAR ever since he played DoD. Unlike most players in the tournament, he regards both weapons as inferior to rifles (garand, kar) on long or pistols (C96, P38, Colt 1911) on short ranges respectively.

Machine-Gunner Class

Ewok is a skilled Machine-Gunner but that is not well known. Because of that, he almost never gets his hand on an MG in battle and lets others pick the class up. When having the MG, Ewok is always on the move with it, using it to push forward continously and using his pistol on the way to a new position. Ewoks great success with this weapon on dod_hobofire suprised some during the fifth battleday of ViE#2. In further battles, such as on churchyard and battlebridge, Ewok got more MG42 kills, making him 5th with that weapon at the end of the campaign (at 428 kills in roughly 6 hours as Machine-Gunner class). Ewok seemed to be one of the dominating MG players again in early ViE#8, at roughly 500 kills from the first two battles. When nobody else wanted the MG, he took it and proved his profiency with it.

Sniper

Ewok has proven to be a skilled sniper in some battles, but he only uses it on certain maps like dod_supplytrains or pier. When he holds a sniper rifle in his hand, Ewok usually tries to hide somewhere, especially on large maps with lots of cover like dod_verdun. The sniper class is the only class in which Ewok assumes a very defensive stance. Ewok lost three consecutive 1vs1 sniper duels vs Cha0sThe0rY.

Skill

Ewok is considered to be moderately skilled when compared to the average skill in ViE, his K:D Rate ranges between 0.8 and 1.2, though it can go up to >2 when he has an MG and go down to 0.5 when he has a bad day, all depending on the map and his current form. Many agree that his K:D Rate could be higher if he stopped trying to spade or knife as many enemies as possible, but Ewok ignores this fact and claims his K:D increases with excessive Knife/Spade use. On a good day Ewok can outshoot even regular CAL-I players with most weapons, but his playing style and ever-changing form have barred him from being recognized as very skilled. His overall K-D in ViE so far is 1.01 (as of ViE#10).

Origin of the Nickname

This is an Ewok

Ewoks is the designation of the furry little bear-like creatures that appear on Endor in the movie StarWars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. Ewok has been a big fan of StarWars for a long time and is using StarWars related nicknames since he started gaming. Before calling himself Ewok, his nickname was "Millenium" (short for Millenium Falcon) for years.

Ewok is a very tall person in real-life, unlike the Ewoks, who stand only about 1 Meter (3 feet) tall, so irony played a part in the decision to pick this nickname. Ewok always liked the Ewoks for being quite intelligent and strong in heart despite being so small and apparently backwards in terms of technology and society. But they proved to learn fast and outsmart even far superior enemies (just see Episode VI for a demonstration).

Ewok's playstyle somewhat simulates the fighting style of the Ewoks, with his preference for "inferior" weapons like the Knife/Spade or the Carbine, C96 and Rocket.

Ewok is using this nickname since early 2001, which coincides with the time he started playing Day of Defeat.

Trivia

  • Due to Ewok's excessive use of the spade, the designation Ewokspade for that weapon could sometimes be seen in the ViE forums in earlier times.
  • Ewok tried to convince the other admins to allow promotions for admins during ViE#1, but failed
  • Ewok was the most active player among the TAs in ViE#1, according to the stats.
  • Ewok was the first Admin to appear in the ViE challenge radio (first episode).
  • 2nd campaigns of any tournament always seem to be made for Ewok to become General. His only previous campaign as General was BFE#2.
  • Ewok committed the first act of admin abuse in ViE, during a frustrating battle on dod_railroad3b3, where he slayed Axis players.
  • After being banned from BFE, he was called the First Martyr.
  • Both in BFE and ViE, Ewok has been a member of the Allied 10th Mountain Division, which is even more notable when you take into account that out of his 17 BFE and 10 ViE campaigns, he only played 7 on Allies (as of ViE#10). Coincidentally, both time Ewok appeared in the A10MD (BFE and ViE), he only played on two battledays in the respective campaign and was absent for a long time.
  • Despite his long BFE/ViE career and countless promotions, ViE#5 marked the first time Ewok managed to get promoted while being on the Allied side, it was also his first time as NCO in ViE despite having held a record number of NCO positions throughout BFE.
  • Ewok selected the article about himself as featured article for the simple reason that few articles employ such a wide range of wiki stylistic devices, but arguably also because he enjoys the popularity.
  • So far (ViE#10), Ewok played four campaigns on Axis (ViE#2, 3, 4 and 9) and six on Allies (#5, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 11) and served one as TA (ViE#1).
  • In ViE#10, Ewok was promoted to a Lieutenant-type rank for the first time in his BFE/ViE career, but he was one of those who introduced the ranks back in BFE#8. Thus it took 16 BFE and 9 ViE campaigns until Ewok would reach a rank that he introduced to the tournament.
  • In ViE#11, Ewok was made an Allied CO for the first time ever in his 17 BFE and 11 ViE campaigns. It should be noted, however, that this was only his 8th appearance on Allies (2 in BFE and 6 in ViE)
