"Divine Wind" - The real meaning of "KAMIKAZE"
In 1274 storms had wrecked a Mongol invasion fleet trying to attack Japan, killing more than 20,000 troops. The Mongol emperor Kublai Khan returned in 1281, this time with a fleet of 4400 ships and 150,000 Chinese and Mongol soldiers the majority from the conquered Sung Dynasty of southern China. Strengthened Japanese defense forced the bulk of the fleet to set anchor off the south-western Japanese coast, where the invaders battled for six weeks. It was there, near the tiny island of Takashima, which disaster struck on July 30 when a typhoon that lasted two days devastated the bulk of the fleet. The boats had been chained together to form a flotilla, pooling the fleet's military resources but effectively bottling up any escape route to deeper water. These two storms that saved Japan added a new phrase in the Japanese language, "kami kaze", meaning "divine wind" sent by the gods to protect Japan. These two events have been claimed to be the largest sea disasters in history. At any rate, it definitely halted the Mongol expansion east, which started with Gengis Khan's conquest of China in the early 13th century. The legend of the kamikaze, sent in response to the emperor's prayers, would grow to become a staple of Japanese folklore, fading away only at the conclusion of a war nearly 700 years later. And the Mongols would never again attempt to invade Japan, aborting a third attempt in 1286 over mounting fiscal worries exacerbated by their military debacle. The "Kamikaze" name was taken by the Japanese pilots during the World War Two, who sacrificed their lives for their country by crashing planes, loaded with explosives on enemy ships.
