History

The RONA, also known as "Kaminski Brigade" after one of its founders, Bronislav Kaminski, was originally formed by citizens of the town of Lokot, who wanted to defend themselves from Soviet partisans who had to rely on raiding their own towns for supplies. Commander of the unit was Ivan Voskoboinik, with Kaminski as deputy commander.

The Nazis allowed the formation of a "Lokot Republic", which fielded the Kaminski Brigade as its militia. Voskoboinik was killed in early 1942, so Kaminski took over the command of the unit. He expanded it and tightened relations with the Germans. By late 1942, the armed forces of the Republic of Lokot had expanded to the size of a five Regiment Brigade, close to 10,000 men under arms.
